State's Attorney to discuss heroin dangers with students

Heroindangers

In an effort to educate students and the public on the dangers of heroin, Madison County State's Attorney Tom Gibbons will speak from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. today at Collinsville Middle School in Collinsville, Illinois.

Madison County had 30 confirmed heroin overdose deaths in the first half of 2015, four more than all of 2014.

Gibbons will be joined by Coroner Steve Nonn, Chief Investigator Kelly Rogers, Collinsville High School Assistant Principal Kari Karidis and Troy Police Officer Chris Coyne. Coyne has  served as a D.A.R.E. officer for over 17 years.

Collinsville Middle is just one of many stops for Gibbons, Nonn and their team of law enforcement officials. They spoke to students at Alton High School and juveniles participating in the county's Juvenile Diversion Program earlier this week, and plan to speak to more students throughout the school year.

Gibbons has served as State's Attorney since 2010.
