Madison County, Illinois has received a $55,000 grant from the utility company Ameren Illinois to help local residents afford their energy bills.

The grant is part of a $1 million in energy assistance being handed by Ameren to more than two dozen of the agencies it serves. The funds for Madison County went to families with incomes between 151 percent and 200 percent of the federal poverty line for their households.

“The partnership between Madison County Community Development and Ameren Illinois serves to help individuals and families in our community get through the winter safely and comfortably,” Madison County Chairman Alan Dunstan said. “We are certainly appreciative of Ameren Illinois’ commitment to the well-being of our residents.”

Ameren officials said the grants reflected the company's commitment to serving all members of the communities where it provides power.

Ameren Illinois provides energy to more than 2 million customers in over 1,200 communities throughout the state.
