Ruocco tells voters tax hike 'headed our way'

Budget 09

House District 113 candidate Katherine Ruocco brought her campaign message of “Balanced Budget - No Tax Hike” to voters in Fairview Heights recently as she warned residents that unless changes are made this election, a tax hike is on the horizon.

“With the highest property taxes in the nation, we can’t afford the tax hike our current state representative has headed our way,” Ruocco said in a recent Facebook post.

Ruocco, who campaigns with a large mobile sign depicting Uncle Sam’s historical “We Need You” image to display her anti-tax hike message and the need for a balanced budget, continues to go after her opponent and current legislators for the state’s budget crisis.

“Note: It was reported today that Illinois has drained its state savings account due to the budget crisis ... and we’re still spending billions we don’t have,” Ruocco said in the Facebook post.

Ruocco pointed to recent news articles that reported the Illinois stop-gap budget is quickly depleting the state’s “rainy day” fund. According to an Associated Press report, Illinois’ fund was at approximately $180 million earlier this month with experts saying it should be at approximately $1.5 billion to $3 billion. The report goes on to say that financial watchdogs claim that because the state is using its “rainy day” fund in the absence of a full budget, it will undoubtedly lead to a recession, new taxes and severe spending cuts.

Ruocco has focused much of her campaign on rallying voters to stand up to current politicians who she says, are not doing their job. After Illinois House of Representatives closed up shop this spring to adjourn, Ruocco even went as far as filing a petition to send lawmakers s back to work.

“Career politicians, such as our present representative in the 113th House District have been feeding at the public trough for too long,” Ruocco said in a letter to voters on her campaign website.

Ruocco, an attorney who has her own private practice, will be squaring off with incumbent Jay Hoffman in the November election for the 113th District seat.
