Four Metro East state representatives were recently targeted by Illinois GOP robocalls.
State Reps. Daniel Beiser (D-Alton), Jerry Costello (D-Red Bud), Jay Hoffman (D-Collinsville) and Katie Stuart (D-Edwardsville) were attacked for their votes in favor of Mike Madigan's (D-Chicago) re-election bid for speaker of the House.
Madigan won the speaker position for the 17th time in a 66-51 vote. He has held the position for 31 of the past 33 years -- with only the 1995-97 term going to Republicans.
GOP Sspokesman Steven Yaffe announced the release of the robocalls in 18 House districts, saying House Democrats "have a terrible and deceptive habit of following Boss Madigan’s orders in Springfield and pocketing his campaign cash while faking 'independence' to their constituents."
The robocalls featured the firm masculine voice of "Chris." Representatives were targeted individually, with charges that the lawmakers had betrayed constituents by choosing Madigan over the people.
The recording continued by calling Madigan a "Chicago political boss" whose years in office were a "reign over Illinois." The call ended with telling the listener that the only way to get a new speaker in the House is by voting out the Madigan supporters in Springfield.
