Swansea VFD responds to 54 fires in 2017

Swansea Volunteer Fire Department responded to 135 calls in 2017 - 12.5 percent more than the previous year, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System.

The calls in Swansea included 54 fires - 30 structure fires, six vehicle fires and 18 other fires.

In all, the department saw $171,000 in fire loss - or about $3,167 per fire.

The department also received 81 false calls, including one malicious call and 80 other false calls.

The Swansea Firefighters Pension Fund, which has two active employees and retired or inactive employee, was $0 positive as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $0 for every fire in 2016.
