State Representative Amy Elik is championing a new legislative package aimed at enhancing public safety, supporting law enforcement officials, and aiding victims of violent crimes. The proposals stem from the efforts of the Truth in Public Safety Working group, which engaged with various stakeholders to address key issues.

Representative Elik emphasized the importance of the legislative package, stating, "The legislative package unveiled in Springfield proves that Republican lawmakers took the concerns of law enforcement seriously and crafted legislation to address continuing issues."

Key components of the legislative package introduced by House Republicans include measures such as widening the detention net for all felonies, revoking pre-trial release for defendants charged with new offenses, and establishing timelines for mental health services for individuals found unfit to stand trial.

One of the bills, HB 5133, aims to create a county co-responder model to support victims in need of mental or behavioral health services. Representative Elik highlighted the significance of this bill, noting that it would ensure a collaborative approach between law enforcement and social workers in responding to emergencies.
