Community and military leaders honored high school seniors who have enlisted in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Second Annual Our Community Salutes Enlistee Recognition Ceremony on April 30 at the First Baptist Church in O’Fallon.
The ceremony, held as part of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations, recognized 51 students from the Class of 2026 for their commitment to military service. The group included future Marines, Sailors, Airmen, and Soldiers joining both active duty and National Guard units. Among those taking the oath were Samson Dada and Ferdows Momen, who will join the Air Force Reserve with assignments to the 932nd Civil Engineering Squadron.
During the event, attendees watched video messages from national leaders such as Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and U.S. Representatives Nikki Budzinski and Mike Bost. Retired Col. Bob Norman said, “As we reflect on 250 years of American history and the legacy of our independence, it is the volunteers stepping forward today who ensure our freedom continues. These young men and women represent the very best of our community.”
Distinguished speakers included State Representative Kevin Schmidt; Col. Jennifer Goetz, commander of the 932nd Mission Support Group; Capt. Jacob Curtis; retired Col. John Kafer; and retired Col. Scot Heathman.
Goetz addressed recruits by saying: “You are choosing to step away from the comforts and familiarities of civilian life to embrace a calling that demands everything you have to give,” Goetz said. “In a nation of over 342 million people, less than one percent choose to wear the uniform of the United States Armed Forces. Less than one percent.” She continued: “You are now stepping into that rare, elite segment of our populations,” she added. “While others may simply enjoy the freedoms our country offers, you have volunteered to be the shield that protects and sustains those freedoms.”
Schmidt told enlistees: “You are now part of a long line of American patriots who have worn the stars and stripes and put country above self. Thank you for answering the call to serve. May God protect you on your journey, and may God continue to Bless the United States of America.” Schmidt was elected in 2023 as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 114th House District after replacing LaToya Greenwood, according to DVIDS.
The ceremony ended with a reception for families and mentors as recruits prepare for basic training.
