Starved Rock State Park remains a popular destination, known for its scenic views along the Illinois River and over 13 miles of trails through sandstone canyons and waterfalls. The park also provides facilities for picnicking, guided hikes, and water sports like kayaking.

For cyclists, the Illinois Prairie Path is an excellent option. Stretching over 60 miles across several counties, this historic rail-trail offers a smooth ride through woodlands and prairies. It connects with other regional trails, making it possible to customize routes for exploration.

Matthiessen State Park is another spot worth visiting. It features unique rock formations and waterfalls within its network of trails that pass through deep canyons and towering trees.

Those seeking a more relaxed biking experience might consider the Tunnel Hill State Trail in southern Illinois. This trail covers 45 miles and passes through forests, farmland, and old railroad tunnels.

Ferne Clyffe State Park provides lush forests, limestone bluffs, and waterfalls in Shawnee Hills. With more than 40 trails available for exploration, visitors can engage in activities such as camping or rock climbing.

Hennepin Canal Parkway State Park is ideal for long-distance biking or hiking along its 104.5-mile path that follows the Hennepin Canal across five counties.

Lastly, Nachusa Grasslands presents a unique opportunity to experience Illinois’ native prairie ecosystem with its bison population and rare plant species spread over 3,600 acres.
