U.S. Representative Mike Bost has announced the allocation of over $850,000 in federal Brownfields assessment grants aimed at environmental cleanup and redevelopment in Jefferson and Gallatin counties. The funding is designated to assist local officials in evaluating former industrial and commercial sites in Mt. Vernon and Shawneetown, developing cleanup plans, and preparing for future development.

“Brownfields can be a blight on an otherwise healthy, growing community,” stated Bost. “I am happy that Mt. Vernon and Shawneetown are receiving federal support to clean up old properties and bring new jobs and development to their downtown areas.”

Mt. Vernon is set to receive $500,000 for assessing and planning the cleanup of sites including the former Park Plaza Shopping Center and a vacant boat repair shop. Meanwhile, Shawneetown will be allocated $350,000 for site assessments and cleanup planning.
