U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem visited Springfield this week, criticizing Illinois’ sanctuary state policies. During her visit, she expressed concerns about the implications of these policies on public safety, stating that they “have unleashed violence on American citizens — including rape, sexual assault, murder, and more.” State Representative Kevin Schmidt echoed these sentiments, stating: “Illinois’ failed sanctuary state policies must end now. I Co-Sponsored HB1317 that would repeal the ‘TRUST Act’. It’s past due to put Illinois families first, and to improve public safety.”

Secretary Noem also criticized Governor Pritzker for allocating $1.6 billion in taxpayer funds to expand healthcare services for undocumented immigrants. Additionally, the state has spent over $3 billion on services for migrants and illegal immigrants.

In other news, Police Week will be observed from May 11-17 to honor law enforcement officers nationwide. Meanwhile, O’Fallon Girl Scouts Troop 456 recently visited the Capitol with Amber Geiger facilitating their trip.

State Representative Kevin Schmidt visited Vincent Gray Academy in Metro East St. Louis to participate in a graduation ceremony. He congratulated the students who received their high school diplomas.

During visits to Millstadt schools, Schmidt discussed local history and legislative processes with students.

The Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability (CGFA) reported challenges facing Illinois’ budget despite a rise in tax revenues attributed to personal income tax payments. A significant decline in federal funding was noted as a concern.

Energy prices are expected to rise significantly this summer according to the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO). Ameren customers can expect electric bills to increase by 18% to 22% during the summer months compared to last year.
