Illinois House Republicans said on March 13 that they are closely watching for any additional spending that could increase the Governor’s already record-high proposed budget. The Governor’s proposal is currently the largest in Illinois history, with a suggested $56 billion for fiscal year 2027.

The issue of state spending has become a point of concern among lawmakers. House Republicans said they are focused on preventing further growth in the budget and want to prioritize policies aimed at reducing the cost of living for residents. “The reckless spending habits by Chicago politicians have hurt all Illinois families who want a brighter future. We need to bring sanity back to our state, cut spending, and focus on lowering the cost of living through common sense policies!” said Illinois State Representative Kevin Schmidt.

According to Illinois Policy, most final budgets under Governor J.B. Pritzker have ended up larger than his initial proposals. Since 2019, final budgets have averaged $939 million more than what was first suggested, often due to tax increases and higher revenue projections according to Illinois Policy.

Schmidt, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 to represent the state’s 114th House District, replacing previous state representative LaToya Greenwood.

Observers will be watching as lawmakers debate whether additional spending will be added before the budget is finalized.
