Governor JB Pritzker’s latest budget proposal has drawn criticism from some Illinois lawmakers who say it reduces funding and authority for local governments. Representative Kevin Schmidt, a Republican from the 114th District, expressed concern that these changes could lead to higher property taxes and fewer essential services for residents.

“Our local governments need more funding, yet the majority party has proposed reducing the amount of tax dollars that help support our communities,” Schmidt said. “When I hear the word affordability I think offering relief to families, not proposals that would increase property taxes and other services.”

Schmidt also referenced a recent WalletHub report ranking Illinois as having the highest tax rates in the nation—53% above the U.S. average. He argued that this situation is unsustainable and attributed it to longstanding public policy decisions.

He called for what he described as a return to common sense in state governance: “We need to get Illinois out of last place and make our state a more affordable place to call home today. The results for our state stem from years of bad public policy and Illinois needs to regain control of common sense to move our state forward.”

In addition to budget concerns, Schmidt highlighted his recent visit to Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, where he toured a new $105 million Health Sciences Building designed to foster collaboration between nursing and pharmacy students. He thanked Chancellor James Minor and Dean Mark Luer for their efforts in supporting education in Southern Illinois.

Schmidt also attended a Citizens Utility Board event aimed at helping residents better understand their utility bills and protect themselves against scams.

A recent poll conducted by M3 Strategies for the Illinois Policy Institute found that nearly 55% of registered voters in Illinois support opting into the Federal Scholarship Tax Credit Program, which allows donors to provide additional academic assistance for students without diverting federal or state funds from public schools or costing states money. Only about one in five voters opposed joining the program. According to Schmidt, “More than half of Illinois voters support the state opting into a federal program to let donors help students find extra academic help.” The state must decide whether to participate by January 1.

Schmidt attended the Surface Warrior Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony at Scott Air Force Base last week, recognizing individuals who have made significant contributions within military transportation commands.

Meanwhile, legislation has been introduced by several senators—including Kimberly Lightford and Rachel Ventura—to raise Illinois’ minimum wage from $15 per hour currently up to $27 by 2032. If passed, wages would increase first this May with subsequent annual increases until reaching $27. Some business advocacy groups have voiced strong opposition due to concerns about potential impacts on small businesses.

Schmidt was elected in 2023 as representative for Illinois’ 114th House District after replacing LaToya Greenwood.

Residents with questions or concerns regarding state issues are encouraged by Schmidt’s office to reach out via phone or email.
