Illinois State Representative Kevin Schmidt has addressed several recent legislative and community developments affecting his 114th District, which covers part of St. Clair County.
A new proposal by Illinois Democrats would impose a tax on shopping bags used at stores, starting with a fee that increases by five cents annually until reaching 25 cents per bag in 2030. Schmidt criticized the bill, arguing it could increase costs for families already struggling with grocery expenses and particularly impact low-income households.
In an effort to engage constituents on policy issues, Schmidt invited residents to participate in his 2026 Legislative Survey. He emphasized the importance of community input: “To be YOUR voice in Springfield, I need to know what issues matter to YOU! Your responses to these survey questions will be taken with me to Springfield and will be my guide when voting for you.”
Schmidt also launched his annual “Valentine’s for Veterans” card drive, encouraging people of all ages to create cards or drawings for veterans living in senior care facilities within the district. Cards should be submitted by February 12. Schmidt stated, “I believe the small things we do for the men and women who served our country makes a big difference in their lives… A simple card or drawing will bring a smile to someone’s face, and that is the goal we are working on together to achieve this Valentine’s Day in the 114th District.”
Additionally, Schmidt announced a partnership event with the Citizens Utility Board (CUB), offering a free Utility Bill Clinic on March 3 at Daugherty Public Library in Dupo. The clinic aims to help residents analyze their utility bills and identify cost-saving opportunities. “Access to affordable utility services is crucial for every household,” said Schmidt. “This Utility Bill Clinic is designed to empower our community members with knowledge and resources to better manage their utility expenses. I’m grateful to the Citizens Utility Board for their partnership in making this event possible.” CUB was established by the Illinois General Assembly in 1983 as an advocate for residential and small-business utility customers.
Schmidt recently attended events aimed at economic development discussions within his district, including participating in Greater Belleville Chamber of Commerce meetings.
He also joined members of the Veterans Assistance Commission (VAC) as they honored David Von Der Heide with the Ambassador of Peace Medal from South Korea, recognizing service during the Korean War.
Addressing fiscal matters, Schmidt voiced opposition to proposals that would tax retirement income: “I reject the idea of a progressive income tax in Illinois because we need to support legislation that keeps retirees in our state who contribute to our economy,” he said. “We need to focus on working together to make Illinois more affordable so everyone is better off, or we will continue to see families exit Illinois to more friendly states with lower taxes.”
Recent news topics highlighted by Schmidt include rising gas prices if Governor Pritzker does not act on an E10 fuel waiver; state funding provided toward groups opposing ICE; potential expansion of manufacturing training at community colleges; proposed requirements for speed-limiting devices on vehicles; and consideration of higher fees—over $470 annually—for electric vehicle owners.
Schmidt was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois’ 114th House District in 2023 after succeeding LaToya Greenwood.
