There have been 50,562 confirmed coronavirus cases in Madison County as of Jan. 4, with 653 deaths linked to the virus, according to data from the state Department of Public Health (IDPH).

Chicago (443,868 cases) and Cook County (427,589 cases) posted the highest numbers statewide. Chicago’s death toll from the virus stands at 6,334, while Cook County recorded 5,775 deaths, according to the IDPH.

Illinois residents who have been tested for COVID-19 now number 45,305,412, the department reported. And the age group with the most confirmed cases was under 20, with 459,353 people in the age group testing positive for the virus.

Among all those testing positive in Illinois, 1,058,260 were male and 1,171,789 were female, the IDPH said. Male deaths linked to coronavirus numbered 15,288, while female deaths stood at 12,789.

Broken down according to race, the fatalities consisted of 17,467 whites, 5,107 African-Americans, 4,128 Hispanics, 912 Asians, and 463 belonging to other races or who did not provide their ethnicity before they died.
