Jennifer Korte, Vice Chair of the Madison County Republicans, said that Charlie Kirk’s assassination was a tragic attack on his life and the free speech he passionately upheld, describing it as a betrayal of the nation’s foundational truths. Korte made her statement to Metro East Sun.
“Charlie Kirk’s murder is a devastating blow not only to his loved ones but to the principles he tirelessly championed,” said Korte, Vice Chairwoman. “His unwavering belief in civil discourse and freedom of speech made him a beacon for those seeking honest debate. This act of violence strikes at the core of what it means to live in a free society. We must honor him by continuing to champion open and courageous dialogue in the face of hatred.”
According to WBEZ Chicago, on September 10, Charlie Kirk, 31, a prominent conservative activist and co-founder of Turning Point USA (TPUSA), was fatally shot while speaking at Utah Valley University. The event was part of his “American Comeback” tour. Cellphone footage shows Kirk collapsing after a single shot in the neck, causing panic among the crowd. President Trump confirmed Kirk’s death on Truth Social and ordered flags to be flown at half-staff. Kirk is survived by his wife Erika and two young children.
North Cook News reported that Kirk had deep connections to Illinois. He grew up in Prospect Heights, attended Wheeling High School, and launched his political career there by organizing student initiatives and speaking at local Tea Party events. He briefly attended Harper College before founding TPUSA from a garage in Lemont. The organization expanded nationally but maintained strong Illinois roots with active chapters at several state universities. Kirk often returned to speak in Illinois and remained a key figure in shaping the state’s conservative youth movement.
Korte was first elected to the role of Vice Chairman of the Madison County Republicans in 2024. As Vice Chair, her focus is boosting the party’s communication, helping new candidates, and educating the public about various legislation impacting the community. She is an advocate for children, senior citizens, and people with disabilities. Korte and her family reside in Edwardsville.
