Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Chairwoman of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs Subcommittee on Health, recently led a legislative hearing to discuss various bills aimed at improving veterans’ healthcare services. The hearing focused on ensuring that veterans receive necessary care regardless of their location and maintaining senior veterans’ priorities within the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) policymaking.
In her opening remarks, Rep. Miller-Meeks emphasized the importance of the 12 legislative proposals under consideration, acknowledging that not all would advance in the legislative process. She stated, “Congress is responsible for ensuring V.A. stewards its resources effectively.”
Among the bills discussed was the Health Professionals Scholarship Program Improvement Act introduced by Representative Hamadeh. This bill addresses issues with VA’s student-to-employee pipeline by offering scholarships in exchange for employment commitments but failing to provide timely positions for graduates.
Representative Kiggans introduced the Representing Our Seniors at V.A. Act to improve input from state veterans homes in serving aging veterans through the Geriatric and Gerontology Advisory Committee.
The Veterans Patient Advocacy Act by Representative Moolenar aims to increase access to patient advocates for rural veterans, addressing challenges faced by those living in remote areas.
Representative King-Hinds proposed the TRAVEL Act, which mandates a one-year assignment for VA physicians in U.S. territories like the Northern Mariana Islands to improve healthcare access in these regions.
The V.A. Data Transparency and Trust Act by Representative McGuire seeks to streamline reporting requirements at VA with a unified report on outcomes and metrics.
Rep. Miller-Meeks also sponsors the Fisher House Availability Act, intended to make lodging more accessible for servicemembers and their families using Fisher Houses when receiving non-VA care.
Additionally, Representative Luttrell’s SAVES Act extends support for service dogs assisting veterans with mental and physical needs, while Representative Dunn’s bill aligns non-smoking policies at VHA facilities with national standards.
Finally, Dr. Murphy introduced a pilot program targeting PTSD-related inflammation and cellular stress research as part of ongoing efforts to enhance screening and diagnosis methods for PTSD among veterans.
These legislative proposals collectively aim to optimize VA operations and reinforce its mission of caring for veterans’ mental and physical health as they transition from military service.
