OPINION: Lawsuit abuse in St. Clair County costs jobs

As a small business owner in Swansea, I’ve seen personally how lawsuit abuse and rising compliance costs can weigh down local businesses.

It’s no surprise to me that St. Clair County earned a “Dishonorable Mention” in the latest Judicial Hellholes report. The only surprise is that we haven’t made the top 10—yet. Without meaningful legal reforms from Springfield, it’s only a matter of time before St. Clair officially earns that dreaded Judicial Hellhole status.

Plaintiffs’ firms continue to file cases here in droves, not because justice demands it, but because the legal environment favors them. Meanwhile, business owners like me are stuck dealing with the consequences—higher premiums, legal fees, and time spent navigating a system that feels rigged against us.

These aren’t just abstract legal issues with no ramifications on the working class; they directly contribute to stacked costs that pile up for businesses on top of the existing burdens of inflation, taxes, and operational expenses. Every frivolous lawsuit or predatory lawyer shakedown adds pressure to an already tight bottom line, and those costs inevitably get passed onto employees, to customers, and to our communities.

Illinois needs to take these warnings seriously. Otherwise, small businesses like mine will continue to pay the price for a legal system that too often rewards abuse over accountability.
