Last week at the Illinois Capitol, State Representative Kevin Schmidt (R-Cahokia) criticized the legislative process, highlighting that 352 bills from Democratic lawmakers were considered in committee compared to just nine from Republicans. Schmidt stated, “House Republicans have sound solutions that would lower the cost of living, improve public safety, and create opportunities, but we continue to be completely shut out of the process.” He called for more transparency and dialogue from the supermajority party.
Schmidt expressed that if Democrats were serious about improving conditions for families in Illinois, they would engage in open discussions and take substantive action. He said, “If the supermajority party was serious about creating a better future for Illinois families, they would come to the table with transparency, conversations, and real action. We have an uphill battle in Illinois, but House Republicans are committed to holding the Democrats accountable and will continue to support legislation that makes life more affordable in Illinois.”
During his time at the Capitol last week, Schmidt met with several constituents from his district. He thanked those who visited his office and encouraged community engagement.
As part of community outreach efforts, Schmidt’s office is offering a free museum pass for constituents. This initiative aims to give families an opportunity to visit museums in the Chicago area at a reduced cost.
Schmidt announced a partnership with the Citizens Utility Board to host a free Utility Bill Clinic on March 3 at Daugherty Public Library District in Dupo. The clinic is designed to provide residents with expert advice on managing their utility bills.
The representative also invited nominations for “Business of the Month” within his district. Selected businesses will receive official recognition and mentions on social media and local outlets. More information is available on Schmidt’s website: https://repschmidt.com/business-of-the-month/
In recognition of Women’s History Month, Schmidt noted its origins as a week-long event established locally in 1978 before Congress expanded it nationally in 1987. He encouraged celebration of women’s achievements throughout American history.
Addressing public safety concerns, Schmidt pointed out issues related to noncitizen truck licenses being issued illegally in Illinois following an audit. He warned that failing to resolve these violations could result in losing over $128 million in federal highway funding.
Other topics mentioned included physician assistants leaving Illinois due to licensing delays; potential property tax impacts from an amended Bears megaproject bill; Idaho’s approach to federal scholarships for students; Governor J.B. Pritzker’s proposed $56 billion budget relying on new revenue; and recent adoption of AI-in-employment regulations by Illinois.
Kevin Schmidt has represented Illinois’ 114th House District since being elected in 2023 as a Republican after succeeding LaToya Greenwood.
