Illinois State Representative Kevin Schmidt announced on Apr. 17 that his bill to expand transparency across government websites in Illinois has passed the House. The legislation, known as House Bill 2137, requires all government websites to provide information allowing the public access to financial and audit reports, including a link to the Comptroller’s website.

The passage of this bill is significant because it aims to improve public access to important government financial information. Supporters say increased transparency can help citizens better understand how their tax dollars are spent and promote accountability among public officials.

“I’m happy to see my bill pass the House that will expand transparency across government websites in Illinois. House Bill 2137 requires all government websites to have information on its site that allows the public to have access to financial/ audit reports, including a link to the Comptroller’s website,” Schmidt said.

Schmidt, a Republican, was elected to the Illinois State House in 2023 representing the state’s 114th District after replacing former representative LaToya Greenwood, according to Ballotpedia.

The move toward greater digital accessibility of financial documents reflects ongoing efforts by lawmakers nationwide who seek more open governance. Observers will be watching how agencies implement these new requirements and whether further steps will be taken for even broader transparency.
