The Alton Plan Commission considered two special use proposals at its most recent meeting.

The Plan Commission for the City of Alton, Illinois, recently met to hear two major requests from its citizens -- one related to a towing dispatch center and one related to a specialty gym and youth center.

Citizen Charles Wiley went before the commission to present a request to add motor vehicle towing dispatch centers to the list of special uses within the R-2 district. He also sought a special use permit to operate a motor vehicle towing dispatch center at 826-834 E. Seventh St.

After his presentation, the commission closed the public hearing while they discussed and voted on the proposal. Ultimately, the presentation was struck down by a vote of six to three.

The committee then reopened the public hearing to examine a request from citizen Edmund Jones, an employee at Giant City LLC. Jones petitioned to add fitness centers to the list of special uses within the C-1 neighborhood commercial district and a special use permit to operate a fitness center at 900-918. Giant City wanted to use the facility to train athletes in the fields of strength, speed and specialty areas.

After the committee closed the public hearing, a motion was made to pass the request -- which went forward by a vote of nine to zero.
