The Alton High School boys' soccer team will feature an old face in a new place this fall.
Nick Funk has been promoted to head coach after three years as an assistant in the program, AdvantageNews.com reported on July 21. Funk was hired during a July 19 school board meeting.
Funk, 28, who also played for the Redbirds, will have his first practice as head coach Aug. 10. His first game at the helm will be against Springfield Sacred Heart Griffin on Aug. 24 at home. Game time is 4:30 p.m., according to AltonAthletics.org.
The Redbirds went 9-10-3 last season under former head coach Jay Robertson. Robertson went 53-62-11 in six seasons in charge. TheTelegraph.com reported that Robertson resigned earlier this summer to go into private business.
Alton has 12 players back from last year's team, according to an AdvantageNews.com report.
