SIUE's Byrd makes big jump to top her own record

Nichyria Byrd, a track and field athlete at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, he been named Co-Female Field Athlete of the Week by the Ohio Valley Conference, the school's website reported.

Byrd, a sophomore, earned the honor after breaking her own SIUE record in the long jump and winning the event at the Joey Haines Invitational on March 31-April 1 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Byrd leaped 19 feet, 8½ inches to top the record she shared with Jatavia Wright by 4¼ inches. The previous record was set in 2013.

The SIUE website reported that Byrd's jump placed her second in the OVC and ranked her No. 20 in the West Region.

Savannah Amato, a pole vaulter from Austin Peay, was the co-winner of the award with Byrd. Amato was sixth in that event at the Florida Relays, Austin Peay's website reported.
