The McKendree University speech and debate team recently landed 11 first place finishes after competing at a tournament at the University of Central Missouri and at a home tournament.
McKendree earned a total of 56 awards in the two tournaments, a McKendree release said.
At its home tournament, three seniors, a junior, a sophomore and six first-year students represented McKendree University. The senior team closed out in the first half of the tournament with first and second place.
At the University of Central Missouri tournament on Oct. 21-22, 21 colleges and universities attended, according to the release. Seniors Brett Hanna and Emma Webster; juniors Justin Fausz and Aliyah Smith; and sophomores Grace Alexander, Kate Maag, Lyndellia Mannie and Isa Scaturro, all represented McKendree University.
Smith won first place in the first half in programmed oral interpretation and fourth place in poetry while Alexander won first place in dinner speaking, the release said.
The McKendree University speech and debate team is among the top 10 schools in parliamentary debate and in 2011-13, it was one of two schools to qualify four teams to the National Parliamentary Tournament of Excellence, according to the school’s website.
