Collinsville Community Unit School District 10 issued the following announcement on May 2.

Collinsville High School Teacher Vicki Fuhrhop was surprised in her classroom early on May 2, 2018 with the announcement she was named 2018 Outstanding Economic Educator by Econ Illinois.

“Each year, Econ Illinois recognizes two teachers in the state with the 3M Outstanding Economic Educator Award. The award honors educators who have a sustained history of commitment and service to economic and personal finance education,” said Joanne Dempsey, former executive director of Econ Illinois.

Dempsey was joined for the award presentation by Dr. Tawni Ferrarini, professor of Economics at Lindenwood University and Robert Baren, senior advisor to Illinois Treasurer Michael Frerichs.

“Winners provide leadership for economics and financial literacy education programs in their school or the community, show evidence of professional growth in economic education, and have an impact on student achievement and growth in economics and personal finance understanding,” according to Dempsey.

Fuhrhop has been a participant in Econ Illinois programming since 2012. Her students have participated in the Illinois Personal Finance Challenge for the past seven years — including state finalists. She participates in The Stock Market Game.

Mrs. Fuhrhop seeks and accomplishes professional development opportunities, including numerous conferences and workshops. She is currently pursuing a Master in Economic Education and Entrepreneurship for Educators from University of Delaware.

The Econ Illinois representatives were joined by CUSD 10 Superintendent Dr. Robert Green, Assistant Superintendent Brad Hyre, Director of Curriculum and Development Latoya Berry-Coleman, Director of Human Resources Kevin Robinson, Collinsville Area Vocational Center Director Dr. Tricia Blackard and Collinsville High School Principal David Snider.

Principal Snider said, “Vicki Fuhrhop is an outstanding educator. She has gone above and beyond in providing meaningful learning opportunities for Collinsville High School students. She is definitely a worthy recipient of the prestigious Outstanding Economic Educator Award presented by Econ Illinois.”

Fuhrhop was in the middle of a consumer education lecture when the group entered her classroom. She was unaware of her selection to receive the prestigious award and described herself as “speechless” but also “honored to receive this recognition.”
