Highland Community Unit School District 5 students suspended 311 times in a single school year

Highland Community Unit School District 5 reported 311 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 311 students during the year. That equates to 10.8 percent of the 2,875 students enrolled.

Of the 254 in-school suspensions, 220 were given to boys and 34 were given to girls, including 59 elementary or middle schoolers and 195 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 217 incidents. There were 13 incidents of tobacco. For 186 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 57 out-of-school suspensions, 45 were given to boys and 12 were given to girls, including 17 elementary or middle schoolers and 40 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 33 incidents. There were 13 incidents of violence that caused physical injury. For 36 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
