Madison Community Unit School District 12 students suspended 898 times in a single school year

Madison Community Unit School District 12 reported 898 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 898 students during the year. That equates to 130.5 percent of the 688 students enrolled.

Of the 478 in-school suspensions, 275 were given to boys and 203 were given to girls.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 433 incidents. There were 45 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 474 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 420 out-of-school suspensions, 264 were given to boys and 156 were given to girls, including 134 elementary or middle schoolers and 284 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 345 incidents. There were 72 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 302 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
