ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 113: Hoffman Stands with Governor, State Police to Enhance Safety and Awareness on Illinois Roadways
Illinois State House District 113 issued the following announcement on June 14
State Rep. Jay Hoffman, D-Swansea, is pushing to strengthen Scott’s Law, the “Move Over” law, announcing the introduction of new protections for Illinois police alongside Gov. J.B. Pritzker and members of the Illinois State Police.
“Illinois State Police officers serve on the frontlines to keep our communities and roadways safe every day,” Hoffman said. “The rise in highway traffic collisions involving motorists and police has spiraled out of control, and it is clear now more than ever that something has to be done to address it.”
Collisions between motorists and police have risen significantly in 2019, with 14 incidents and one fatality reported since the start of the year. Hoffman and other lawmakers are sponsoring Senate Bill 1862, which would enhance penalties for persons who neglect to yield or move over for State Police when traveling on Illinois highways.
“This bill is in response to the alarming rise in the number of incidents which are placing the lives our police at greater risk,” Hoffman said. “It is our responsibility to make sure we are taking every possible step to prevent these situations from reoccurring in the future.”
