GRANITE CITY COMMUNITY UNIT SCHOOL DISTRICT 9: Teacher Spotlight - Holly Farnsworth, Prather

Hs 05

Granite City Community Unit School District 9 recently issued the following announcement.

Every other week throughout the 2020-21 school year, Granite City Community Unit School District #9 features a teacher who is going above and beyond to better serve our students.

The “Teacher Spotlight” features Prather kindergarten teacher Holly Farnsworth.

Mrs. Farnsworth began working for GCSD9 in 2006 as substitute teacher, following a stint as a teacher in the Hazelwood School District. She has also taught 5th grade at Wilson Elementary School and Grigsby Intermediate School, and is in her fifth year at Prather.

Away from the classroom, Mrs. Farnsworth and her husband George have two sons, Austin (24) and Carson (13), and a dog named Odin. They reside in Florissant.

Get to know Mrs. Farnsworth…

Where were you born?

I was born in Alton, and I grew up in Granite City.

Talk about your involvement in sports while growing up?

I was very involved in sports growing up. There was never a night that I didn't have to go to a practice or a game. I remember sometimes having to go from one sport to the other sport, changing uniforms in the car.

I grew up participating in soccer, basketball, softball, swimming, cross country, cheerleading and track. I asked to play football and hockey, but my mother told me NO. My favorite sport is soccer. I still play indoor soccer!

What college (s) did you attend and what degree (s) did you receive?

I attended UMSL and received my bachelor's degree in education. Then, I attended McKendree University and received my master's degree in special education.

Favorite food?

Mexican food and pizza are my favorite. I could eat either one every night.

Favorite movie?

Sweet Home Alabama and any sports movie.

Who is someone you look up to and why?

I always looked up to my mother and grandmother growing up. They were both genuine ladies; kind, generous, and humble.

Did you always know you wanted to be a teacher?

Yes, I have always worked with kids, whether it be at preschool, a summer camp, or coaching.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I love teaching kindergarten! I enjoy seeing how motivated my students are, how excited they get when they realize they can read, and just how much they grow throughout the year.

What have you learned about yourself as a teacher during remote learning?

Being flexible, having to adapt my teaching style to create a similar environment to the actual classroom. Also, how important working with your team(coworkers) is, we all bring certain things to the table that has helped during remote learning.

Hobbies?

I enjoy being outside, whether it be out on the water in our boat or out on the sidelines cheering on my kids at their sporting events.
