A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was submitted to the City Of Granite City Finance Department on October 25, 2024. The request was made by Metro East Sun, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
We at Metro East Sun have requested access to specific records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. We have asked for these records in an electronic format for ease of analysis and reporting.
The specific information we have requested includes data on sales tax collected from retailers from January 1, 204 till the date of our request. We have asked for detailed breakdowns that include sales tax collected from retailers by month versus projected figures, the number of active retail locations paying sales tax by month, and the names of each retailer along with their gross retail sales reported for each month.
As a media organization, we are involved in gathering and disseminating news to the public. Access to public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities which include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. Given our role in disseminating information, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.
