A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City of Troy, Illinois, on October 28, 2024. The request was made by Metro East Sun, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In the request, we asked for a list of all parking violations currently unpaid within the city. The specifics requested include the name of the offender, their address, the amount due for each violation, the date of each violation, and the total amount due overall.
As a media organization committed to transparency and holding public institutions accountable, we believe access to such public records is essential in fulfilling our professional responsibilities.
The Illinois Freedom of Information Act (5 ILCS 140) provides for public access to government documents and records. In our role as journalists reporting news to the public, we have requested these records preferably in an electronic format for ease of dissemination.
We also highlighted our eligibility for a fee waiver as a media professional given our role in disseminating information to the public.
