FOIA Request to City Of Belleville Finance Department Regarding Sales Tax Collected from Retailers on October 25, 2024.
The Metro East Sun, a media organization dedicated to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, has sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the City Of Belleville Finance Department. The request was made under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140.
In our pursuit of transparency and accountability in public institutions, we have requested specific records pertaining to sales tax collected from retailers since the beginning of this year until today's date. We are particularly interested in understanding how actual collections compare with projections.
We have asked for details such as the amount of sales tax collected from retailers by month versus projected figures. Additionally, we have sought information about the number of active retail locations paying sales tax each month and their names along with gross retail sales reported by each for every month.
As a media organization, we believe access to these public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. We aim to provide transparency to the public and hold public institutions accountable. We trust that our role in disseminating information makes us eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional.
We await the response from the City Of Belleville Finance Department and will continue our work in bringing crucial information related to local governmental affairs to light.
