State Representative Amy Elik, alongside House Republican Leader Tony McCombie and Representative John Cabello, has called for greater transparency regarding the immigration situation in Illinois. The representatives are urging accountability from state leaders on this issue.
Leader McCombie criticized Democratic leaders for what she described as "sneaky tactics" to avoid taking responsibility. She stated, "[Governor J.B. Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson] pander to their political base, passing out of touch immigration reforms, and then when those policies ultimately fail, they spread false information, withhold key details, blame anyone but themselves and refuse to answer basic questions about the impact of these policies."
Representative Cabello highlighted concerns over public safety and urged House Democrats to repeal the TRUST Act. This act limits communication between Illinois law enforcement and ICE concerning detaining and deporting violent criminals.
Representative Elik expressed concerns about the financial burden posed by illegal immigrants in Illinois. She noted that over 530,000 illegal immigrants cost taxpayers more than $1 billion annually. Elik stated, “Illinois simply cannot afford to spend over 1 billion dollars per year on food, housing, and healthcare for illegal immigrants,” adding that these funds could address other pressing issues like homelessness and inflation.
Elik emphasized that prioritizing Illinois citizens should not be a partisan matter: "As long as Illinois continues to put illegal immigrants above Illinois families, we will continue to see families and businesses leaving this state in droves."
The representatives' remarks were made available for public viewing.
