To address concerns about property taxes among older residents, Illinois State Senator Erica Harriss (R-Edwardsville) has played a key role in passing legislation aimed at expanding property tax relief for seniors. The bill, known as Senate Bill 642, seeks to increase the income limits for the Low-Income Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption—commonly referred to as the “Senior Freeze.” This adjustment would allow more senior homeowners to qualify for property tax relief.
Senator Harriss stated, "One of the top issues I hear when meeting with senior citizens is the need for property tax relief. As a direct result of these conversations and concerns, I have worked each year since I was elected to draft and submit bill language to do just that. I am elated to report that specific language was added to this bill, and passed. This is a win for seniors, and I am proud to have championed this effort."
The proposed legislation increases the income cap for eligibility under the exemption program: $75,000 in 2026, $77,000 in 2027, and $79,000 in 2028 and beyond. The goal is to make it easier for seniors facing rising costs to remain in their homes.
Illinois has some of the highest property taxes in the United States. Senate Bill 642 passed unanimously in the state Senate and now awaits action by the Governor.
Harriss was elected as a Republican representative for Illinois' 56th Senate District in 2023, succeeding Kris Tharp.
