Granite City Steelworks could close, costing thousands of jobs.
Madison County Chairman Alan J. Dunstan recently announced that thousands of people could be losing their jobs if Granite City Steelworks were to close down.
In a public statement, Dunstan commented that other steel corporations haven't played fair, causing the U.S. Steel Corporation to suffer financial loss.
"Unfair trade practices, fluctuating oil prices and inferior steel imported from South Korea, Mexico, Turkey and elsewhere have put our country’s steel-producing companies -- and our hard-working, skilled steel workers -- at a distinct disadvantage and have taken us to where we are today," Dunstan said.
Dunstan plans to focus on economic growth and creating new jobs in Madison County, in order to prepare employees at Granite City Steelworks for what may come.
