Of all Illinois “master’s institutions,” Southern Illinois University Edwardsville ranks as third best in the state by Washington Monthly and in the top 60 for such institutions nationwide for a record-setting seventh consecutive year.
“Washington Monthly’s annual rankings are significant as SIUE follows through on its mission to shape a changing world,” SIUE Chancellor Randy Pembrook said. “It is impressive for such a young university to be included among the top 10 percent of master’s institutions nationally.”
Additionally, SIUE is considered among the “Best Bang for the Buck” institutions in the Midwest region for the second year in a row. It came in at 59th place overall for master’s universities on the national level, 63rd best for research outlay and 20th in the proportion of work-study funds channeled to students active in community service.
A master's college or university is any educational institution awarding “at least 50 master's degrees … but fewer than 20 doctorates" annually as defined by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, a nationwide framework founded in 1973 for classifying and comparing U.S. colleges and universities.
Washington Monthly is a bimonthly magazine focused on politics and government based in Washington, D.C. The magazine is known for its annual ranking of American colleges and universities.
