The competition could be fierce for Cougar guards after the basketball team added four guards among six recruits for the 2017-18 season, Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville announced recently.
Daniel Kinchen, a 6-foot-3 guard, played for Alabama Southern Community College, where he was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-America third team. He averaged 26.7 points per game last season.
Jaylen McCoy, a 5-foot-11 guard, averaged 14.9 points a game for Wallace State Community College last season. Also joining the Cougars' backcourt is 6-foot-4 guard David McFarland from East Mississippi Community College, where he averaged 17.3 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest. Joining the frontcourt is Toriano Stokes, a 6-foot-9 center who averaged 5.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots for Southwest Tennessee Community College.
From the high school ranks, D.J. Jackson, a 6-foot-5 forward, comes from Fayette Ware in Moscow, Tennessee, after averaging 23 points, 11 rebounds and five assists per game, and Nico Johnson, a 6-foot-1 guard from Danville, who averaged 16 points, six assists and five boards in his junior season at Danville before going to Conrad Academy in Florida.
