Analysis: Sales tax funded 8 percent of City of Alton budget in 2016

The City of Alton's local sales tax brought in $4,380,802 in 2016, according to Illinois state comptroller revenue data. Alton, population 27,000, relied on its local sales tax to contribute 8 percent of total revenue that year.

Metro East Sun analyzed the sales tax collections in three Madison County municipalities and found they generated a total of $7,311,117 in tax revenue in 2016. That was the equivalent of 6 percent spent by local government.
