After a second-quarter revenue loss of nearly $251 million, Sears announced the upcoming closure of 28 Kmart stores across the country, including its store in Belleville.
The store, at 7230 Westfield Plaza, will be shuttered in mid-November, Sears said. Although the Belleville location has long been suffering from poor sales, locals claim to be unhappy that the closing will take away a valuable discount shopping venue, according to the Belleville News-Democrat's online site.
Illinois will also lose Kmarts in Oak Lawn and Elmhurst. The other 25 closures will take place in Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Kansas, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and South Carolina.
Liquidation sales were expected to begin at the end of August.
The first Kmart opened in 1962 in Garden City, Michigan.
