Library(1000)

Fourteen Madison County college students recently received scholarships totaling $10,500 through the 2017 Community Service Block Grant Scholarship administered by Madison County Community Development, according to a press release.

The scholarships will provide the students with $750 for both semesters of the upcoming school year, with the second semester’s funding dependent on the students maintaining a certain grade point average. The funding can be applied to tuition, books and fees.

Students who received the awards are attending Lewis & Clark Community College, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, Southwestern Illinois College and Southern Illinois University Carbondale. They are pursuing degrees in a variety of fields, ranging from art and dental hygiene to computer science and workforce education and development.

Five of the scholarship winners – Gabrielle DeRouen, Timothy Acian, Alexis Misturak, Paeton Pavia and Aimee Pargin – attended a ceremony for the scholarships. Madison County Recorder Amy Meyer and County Board members Clint Jones and Bruce Malone presided over the ceremony, presenting the honorees with their scholarships.

To qualify, students who met the income requirements had to submit an application with a letter of recommendation and an essay. They also had to furnish transcripts.
