Voters missing out by Rauner balking at Ives debate, Kay says

Vote13

Dwight Kay think he knows exactly what Gov. Bruce Rauner is trying to do, he just finds the governor's actions and logic totally impractical.

“I think most people think they’re insulated once in office,” he told the East Central Reporter. “A lot of incumbents don’t take criticism well, but this state is in real trouble and people deserve the truth.”

Kay’s reaction was sparked by Rauner’s steadfast refusal to debate Republican primary challenger Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton). With just over six-weeks remaining until the primary, Rauner remains immovable on the subject, prompting the Telegraph to recently blast him as “a coward” after he refused an offer from the University of Illinois at Springfield to set up a debate this month.

“How else do people get the message of what a candidate stands for unless people get to see the two side by side talking about their policies,” Kay said. “There should be numerous debates between the two. Jeanne Ives shows that she understands the policies that the state needs and what the people here are longing for.”

Kay, a Glen Carbon Republican, also longs to be part of the process. He is running for the seat held by Rep. Katie Stuart (D-Edwardsville) in the 112th House District.

“It’s going well, and we have a terrific ground game,” Kay said. “I find grassroots efforts tend to win campaigns and we’re going door to door and making calls, talking with voters.”

Kay, who previously served as state representative in the 112th District from 2011 to 2017, said his campaign platform centers on lowering property taxes, repealing the 32 percent income tax hike that was imposed as part of the state budget and greater job creation.

“These are the issues that are driving people out of the state,” Kay said. “We’ve got to change things because people are showing their dissatisfaction with their feet. People are frustrated, scared and see no opportunity. Politicians in Springfield better start working for the people, because this state is really under water.”

The 112th District includes Glen Carbon and parts of Maryville, Edwardsville, Collinsville, Granite City and O'Fallon.
