In a four-way GOP primary race for the state Senate seat in the 54th District, Jason Plummer won by a stunning 36.9 percent margin over challengers Ben Stratemeyer, Rafael Him and George Barber.
Plummer ran on a platform of financial reform and promised to stem the tide of people and businesses moving out of the state. Plummer talked about an “exodus” partially created by establishment politics that put pressure on businesses and homeowners with high property and income taxes.
Plummer currently has no Democrats running against him in the bid for the seat currently held by Sen. Kyle McCarter (R-Lebanon), who is not seeking re-election.
As the runner-up in the race, Stratemeyer received 4,500 votes, while Plummer topped 12,600 votes. Him and Barber each received less than 3,000 votes.
The 54th District includes all or parts of Fayette, Effingham, Bond, Clinton, Marion, Madison, St. Clair and Washington counties.
