Ray Wesley, chairman of the Madison County Republicans, said Gov. J.B. Pritzker is prioritizing a partisan agenda over the interests of Illinois citizens, telling the Metro East Sun that Pritzker’s remarks suggest he would be a “disastrous president.”
"Pritzker has made it clear that advancing his political career matters more to him than addressing the real needs of Illinois residents," said Wesley. "His inflammatory remark about Republicans not deserving “a moment of peace” shows he's more interested in scoring political points than uniting the country. Illinois has endured his failed policies for years. Putting him in charge of America would only spread that dysfunction nationwide."
According to The Hill, during the New Hampshire Democratic Party’s McIntyre-Shaheen 100 Club Dinner on April 27, Governor Pritzker called for mass protests and criticized both the Trump administration and fellow Democrats he deemed ineffective. Pritzker said, "Never before in my life have I called for mass protests, for mobilization, for disruption. But I am now." He further urged that Republicans "cannot know a moment of peace" and encouraged opposition "with every megaphone and microphone that we have." He added, "We must castigate them on the soapbox and then punish them at the ballot box," labeling GOP members as "quislings and cowards."
Fox News reported that Governor Pritzker visited New Hampshire to headline the state Democratic Party’s largest annual fundraiser. This visit has drawn attention to him as a potential 2028 presidential contender. According to Fox News, Pritzker is recognized for his strong criticism of President Trump's actions. He emphasized the need to be prepared for political battles by describing the current situation as a "constitutional crisis." Although Pritzker has not confirmed any future political ambitions, he is noted as being the first Democrat to visit an early primary state since the 2024 election.
The Illinois Policy Institute highlighted ongoing economic challenges in Illinois under Governor Pritzker's leadership. The state's unemployment rate stands at 5%, ranking third highest in the nation, up from 4.6% when Pritzker assumed office. Illinois ranks 43rd in total job growth and 44th in private-sector job growth. Wage growth has been slow since December 2018, with average wages placing Illinois 28th nationally. These economic issues are contributing factors to many residents leaving the state due to difficulties finding jobs and stagnant wages.
Wesley was elected Chairman of the Madison County Republican Party in October 2019. His focus includes communicating conservative values and addressing key issues important to Madison County voters. His responsibilities encompass fundraising, expanding party membership, and increasing voter turnout. Wesley resides with his wife in Godfrey.
