Belle Valley School District 119 students suspended 342 times in a single school year

Belle Valley School District 119 reported 342 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

The district transferred one students to another program instead of suspending or expelling them.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 342 students during the year. That equates to 33.7 percent of the 1,014 students enrolled.

Of the 311 in-school suspensions, 194 were given to boys and 117 were given to girls, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 277 incidents. There were 34 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 190 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 31 out-of-school suspensions, 15 were given to boys and 16 were given to girls, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 19 incidents. There were 12 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 13 incidents, students were suspended for 5-10 days.
