Belleville School District 118 students suspended 298 times in a single school year

Belleville School District 118 reported 298 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

The district transferred one students to another program instead of suspending or expelling them.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 298 students during the year. That equates to 7.7 percent of the 3,868 students enrolled.

Of the 219 in-school suspensions, 184 were given to boys and 35 were given to girls, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 181 incidents. There were 31 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 192 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 79 out-of-school suspensions, 67 were given to boys and 12 were given to girls, all of whom were elementary or middle schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 58 incidents. There were eight incidents of violence without physical injury. For 42 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
