Dominic Lovett picked a good time to be at his eye-popping best for the Belleville West football team.
The speedy sophomore hauled in five touchdown catches against crosstown rival Belleville East in leading them to a 45-3 win that also drew the team a step closer to playing host to a first-round playoff game at Bob Goalby Field.
Lovett connected with quarterback Jack McCloskey on scoring darts of 32, 13, 57, 27 and 36 yards. The win punctuated a 7-2 regular season for Belleville West and put Lovett in the school record books with 23 touchdown receptions in a single season.
“We really wanted this win to keep the positive momentum going,” Lovett told the Belleville News-Democrat. “At the same time, we wanted to get the regular season over with. We’re really looking forward to the playoffs.”
Belleville West, which opened the season with five straight wins, has now qualified for the postseason in seven straight seasons.
McCloskey finished the night 14 of 24 passing for 281 yards and five touchdowns.
