Coronavirus cases among St. Clair County nursing home residents numbered 67 as of April 21, two of whom died as a result of the virus, according to data from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH).
The nursing home in the county with the highest number of Covid-19 cases was Memorial Care Center, which recorded 54 cases and one death, the IDPH numbers show.
Statewide, 1,869 Covid-19 cases were reported among nursing home residents, and among those, there were 284 deaths, according to an analysis of the data. The nursing home deaths represent 19.3 percent of the total coronavirus deaths in the state as of April 21.
The release of the data was the result of Gov. J. B. Pritzker’s administration deciding on Sunday to make the coronavirus cases in long-term care facilities public.
The characteristics of nursing home living make the facilities at high risk in the spread of Covid-19, according to the IDPH. The combination of an older-adult population, chronic medical conditions and living in a congregated setting can spread the virus, leading to lethal consequences, the department reported.
Current guidance to nursing homes includes having staffs practice increased hand hygiene between patients, staggering dining periods, more social distancing and cancellation of group activities, according to the IDPH.
