Elik: Pritzker should consider regional approach to reopening state

The way Amy Elik sees it, Gov. J.B. Pritzker could use a refresher course when it comes to his job description.

“The people of downstate Illinois have different living conditions than in large urban areas such as Chicago, and the governor needs to take those situations into account in his decision making,” she told the Metro East Sun.

Elik, now running against incumbent state Rep. Monica Bristow (D-Alton) in the 111th District, is among the growing list of Republican lawmakers publicly finding fault with Pritzker’s one-size-fits-all approach to dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, including recently announcing plans to extend the statewide stay-at-home order he initially enacted by in March through the end of May.

“Gov. Pritzker should consider the health data and also the economic conditions of all areas of the state,” Elik said. “A regional approach to reopening our economy should be considered as soon as the data shows it is safe to do so. In addition, outdoor activities, with proper social distancing, should be allowed in our state and city parks.”

Elik argues small business owners have especially paid a hefty price for the governor’s inflexibility.

“Small business owners have certainly felt the weight of the restrictions and are eager to reopen,” she said. “Their contributions to our economy and communities are critically important and many are willing to implement strict safety guidelines in order to have a chance to reopen as soon as possible.”

Elik said it is incumbent on Pritzker to devise a plan to help bolster the industry if Illinois is to have any chance of getting back to normal once the crisis has passed.

“To support their ongoing expenses, including rent and mortgage payments and supporting employees, small businesses need to be given the chance to implement safety protocols and reopen as soon as it is safe to do so,” she said. “In addition, loan and grant programs need to be funded and available to help our businesses stay open. State government can help our economy rebuild faster by removing the progressive income tax and other tax and fee increases, relaxing some regulatory burdens, and providing clear guidance on safety protocols.”
