State Sen. Paul Schimpf (R-Waterloo) expressed disappointment that the fall Veto Session of the legislature has been cancelled.
“I’m disappointed but not surprised,” he told the Metro East Sun. “This cancellation prevents us from holding public hearings on the governor’s unilateral coronavirus response plan, meaning that the legislature will continue to have no voice or role in one of the biggest issues the state has ever faced. While leadership publicly says that the danger is too great for lawmakers to go to work, the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules has safely met throughout the pandemic at the Capitol.”
Speaker Mike Madigan canceled the session over concerns over rising COVID-19 and the upcoming holidays.
“There is a strong majority of members who would prefer the House delay convening to a later date; this is primarily motivated by concerns about the rising COVID-19 rates and proximity to upcoming holidays,” Madigan’s chief of staff, Jessica Basham, said in a letter to members, The Center Square reported. “I'm advised that there are similar concerns among Senate members, who were also surveyed over the weekend.”
