The Illinois Opportunity Project has issued the following press release:

Chicago, IL- In a report from the Guardian, local residents in Centreville call out their local politicians who have been ignoring the overwhelming flooding and sewage issues plaguing the small town saying, “They couldn’t care less.”

This disturbing report comes as local state Sen. Chris Belt (D-Centreville) has been criticized for his position as superintendent at Commonfields of Cahokia Public Water and Sewage District. The position has a taxpayer funded salary of $58,000. Belt also has a $69,000 salary for serving as state senator. When simply asked what he does as superintendent, Belt responded that he was unable to discuss his position due to ongoing litigation.

Belt has held the position at the Water and Sewage District for six years.

“This disturbing report shows how Centreville families have been let down by politicians like Sen. Belt. Rather than lead on the issue, Belt shifts the blame, the problems go unsolved, families suffer, and he continues to collect a paycheck,” said Mark Cavers, president of the Illinois Opportunity Project. “Is this what families are paying Sen. Belt for?”

The Guardian piece is just the most recent reporting on the “humanitarian crisis” in Centreville. Resident Valerie Marion is quoted in the piece saying of local elected officials, “They couldn’t care less about what we think.”

“Families are suffering and their calls for help are being ignored by Gov. Pritzker and Sen. Belt. If politicians were interested in helping, they have had ample opportunities to act and end this issue. Instead, Pritzker and Belt primarily ignore the pleas for relief and when they can be bothered, they point to past empty statements that do nothing to help residents. Residents in Centreville deserve better,” said Cavers.

The Illinois Opportunity Project is a grassroots organization that believes that empowering and organizing people around our shared values and free-market principles is the most impactful way to change our State and strengthen our communities.
