VI. Strategic Plan for 2022
The commission entered into a lively discussion on the importance of having a proper strategic plan. Commissioner Burrows shared her thoughts on making sure the commission implements an educational component, a plan as to where sculptures should be placed, a fundraising plan. The commission also questioned who are we as a Public Art Commission? Should we consider looking for up and coming artists to feature in our collection? Do we want to look at ensuring we have diversity in artists and materials? Commissioner Stevenson spoke to goal setting and shared the following quote: “You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems. Your goal is your desired outcome. Your system is the collection of daily habits that will get you there. This year, spend less time focusing on outcomes and more time focusing on the habits that precede the results.” Following the reading of the quote Commissioner Stevenson shared that the commission should be working on writing curriculum for the schools. He also spoke to community engagement and integration. How do we set a goal for this? What system can we put in place to make this happen? Commissioner Burrows shared that she feels the commission is backtracking. Commissioner Burrows expressed a strong desire to have goals and plans clearly laid out. Commissioner Burrows shared a desire to advance the knowledge of Otocast. Commissioner Stevenson shared that he didn’t feel prepared to properly discuss the strategic plan tonight, but Chairperson Burrows asked for each commissioner to share his/her views. Commissioner Cheney thinks it’s wonderful to have the schools involved and supports the idea of continuing the relationship we have with HF and the sculptures. Commissioner Cheney shared that he enjoyed the art auction held in a previous year and found the experience to be both entertaining and fruitful. Commissioner Miller asked the commission how we they go about obtaining sculptures. Commissioner Gordon shared that often times art shows are a great place to find a new artist or a piece. Commissioner Gordon worries that 3K may not be enough to continue to attract new artists for our sculpture collection. Commissioner Lawrence feels that all pieces of the strategic plan feed into each other. We need to bring community members in and wonders if art teachers (K-12) would be interested in coming to a meeting and work on writing curriculum that would include the sculpture collection. Commissioner Gordon agrees with the sentiments from all of the commissioners. Commissioner O’Brien also agrees with the commissioners and likes the idea of a fundraiser in the Garden? Commissioner Burrows spoke to the unity of all the pieces and bringing the community together. Commissioner Burrows also expressed a desire to add to the strategic plan a note about getting the other commissions involved in events with the Art Commission.
VII. Rotational Program Updates
Sculpture Updates: Commissioner Stevenson showed the commission a sculpture by Jason Pickleman titled Hand Heart. Commissioner Stevenson shared he believes it’s a possibility that we will acquire this piece as part of our rotational collection. I think it is that it is a possibility that we might have the opportunity and option. Commissioner O’Brien shared that we should consider the possibility of other sculptures than those that are the color red. Commissioner Stevenson and Stephanie will meet with Dr. Smith and Ms. Holland from Heather Hill School to discuss placement of The Secret Garden on their campus. Stephanie shared the IGA with Western Avenue school and 161 has been put on hold as their long-range plan is still being developed. This means the commission needs to consider a new placement for Land Jacks. The commission began a discussion surrounding the placement of sculptures. It was determined that the sculpture Reach for the Sky would be placed on an existing pad in Leavitt park and would no longer need an IGA. The Land Jacks could be installed at Leavitt Park pending an IGA that Stephanie will get to the Park District and Village Board. Stephanie also shared that Jason Verbeek is waiting on Sedum to be delivered so he can bring Vertical Vegetation. Stephanie is in close contact will all artists and hopes to have movement by the end of April. The commission discussed that Minions needs repair. The commission asked Stephanie to reach out to the artist for repairs suggestions or to do the work. Commissioner Stevenson has a contact to do the repairs if the artist isn’t available. The commission discussed the purchase of Red Cross Lines. Stephanie shared that the starting price for the piece is 10k. A discussion began surrounding the fact that the piece needs painting. The process can be costly. Stephanie to reach out to the artist in regards to having the piece painted.
